Course Format

Taught sessions, large and small group work, skills practice and learning journal. In addition, those wanting to have an accredited certificate (see below) there will be a requirement for 4 marked assignments and portfolio development. Assistance is given to those who feel they may struggle with written assignments or who have been out of education for a number of years.

Entry Requirements

Students should have entry level English and sufficient IT skills to produce short assignments in either Microsoft Word or Mac Pages etc. Many Students find the course highly rewarding, exciting and also emotionally challenging. Applicants should therefore be in a fairly stable emotional state when applying (e.g. those with recent bereavement/loss/relationship breakdown/trauma may find they struggle with the emotional impact of the course). Applicants will need to take part in an informal telephone interview after which a decision will be made as to your place on the course. Places are also subject to maximum numbers.

This 12 session course is accredited by open college network west midlands (a national awarding organisation) and students will be rewarded with either a Level 2 or Level 3 certificate on successful completion of the course (80% attendance is required). This is not a 'qualification' as such, but rather academic credit, which proves the student has gone through a rigorous quality assurance learning programme which has been externally verified.

Progression and Career Development

Many of those who have undertaken this course have progressed on to our level 4 certificate (a nationally recognised qualification) which runs for a full academic year. The level 4 certificate gives students a broader experience in counselling skills and is preparation for undertaking a L4 Diploma or Foundation degree after which students can become members of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and work towards accreditation.
